Hello! I’m Laurie Bassam

I’m a curator, creative producer and researcher based in Brighton.

Currently I’m the heritage collections curator at Towner, Eastbourne. I am working on the Black Robin Farm project, a new exciting arts education and cultural centre planned for the South Downs, Sussex.

About me

(02 - 04)

Hi! I’m Laurie.
I'm a curator passionate about how museums, art, and heritage can tell stories about the world and the people in it. I love using public collections to connect with others and ensuring our museums and gallery spaces reflect stories that include all of us.

I'm a strong advocate for greater inclusion of LGBTQ+ art and design histories in public collections, and I'm always exploring new ways to bring other marginalised voices into mainstream settings.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve built a broad range of experience across the creative industries. Before my current role, I worked as the curator of art, design at craft at Brighton Museum, a project curator for the National Trust for Scotland, spent five years as Assistant Curator at V&A Dundee, and held various roles at institutions ranging from V&A South Kensington to CodeBase - Scotland’s largest technology incubator.

A little more about me

Across my various roles, I’ve built up a wide range of skills — from hands-on curation and research to project management, budgeting, and logistics. I’ve done a lot!

Along the way, I’ve honed my writing skills too. I’ve turned my hand to everything from editing exhibition labels, to proofreading event programmes and web content, to writing sections for books and blogs for national organisations. I’ve also delivered countless public talks, led workshops, and appeared on television as part of the BBC’s Secrets of the Museum series.

What matters most to me is getting the job done in the most effective way, for both myself and the people I’m working with.

Beyond the nuts and bolts, I'm especially interested in collaborative ways of working. Whether that’s through community curation or partnering with artists and collectives to imagine new work, I’m keen to explore new ideas.

I strive to make my projects feel collaborative, process-driven, and clearly defined, with outcomes that everyone feels good about.

I’m based in Brighton, but happy to travel for longer consulting or project management roles. Please do get in touch.
