Hello! I’m Laurie Bassam
I’m a Curator, creative producer and researcher based in Brighton.
Currently, I’m the curator of Art, Design, and Craft at Brighton Museum.
About me
(02 - 04)
Hi! I’m Laurie. I’m curator who is passionate about the way we can use museums, art and heritage to tell stories about the world and the people in it. I love using public collections to connect to others, making sure our civic spaces tell stories that include all of us. I’m a real advocate for the greater inclusion of LGBTQ+ art and design histories, and finding new ways we can include other marginalized histories in mainstream storytelling.
Over the last 15 years, I’ve developed a huge range of skills across the Creative Industries, Heritage, and Museum sectors. Prior to my current post in Brighton, I worked as a project curator for the National Trust for Scotland, I spent 5 years as Assistant Curator for V&A Dundee, and have had various roles at places as diverse as V&A South Kensington and Codebase - Scotland’s largest technology incubator.

A little more about me
Across my various roles, I’ve built up a huge range of skills. From straight-up curation, to project management and budgeting, from label writing to events production. I’ve written articles and reports, co-convened conferences and festivals, and arranged artist logistics and travel. Most important aspect for me is getting the job done most effectively for me and my clients.
Aside from the nuts and bolts, what I’m most keen on is finding collaborative ways of working and focusing on community curation, as well as working directly with artists or collectives to imagine new works. I always strive for my projects feel collaborative, but be process driven and have clear outcomes that everyone is happy with.
I’m based in Brighton, but available to travel for longer consulting and project management roles. Please do get in touch.
